Sisterlocks vs. Microlocs: What’s the Difference & Why I Chose Microlocs

When I first considered starting my loc journey, I spent over a year researching, debating, and envisioning what would work best for me. Like many, I was torn between Sisterlocks and Microlocs—two beautiful, versatile styles that offer a refined, lightweight look. Both styles celebrate the natural beauty of textured hair, but there are key differences that might make one better suited for you than the other.

In this post, I’ll break down the differences between Sisterlocks and Microlocs, the benefits of each, and why I ultimately chose Microlocs for my own journey.

What Are Sisterlocks?

Sisterlocks are a trademarked loc system developed by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell in the 1990s. They are:

Extremely small & uniform – Installed using a specialized interlocking tool, resulting in sleek, grid-like parting.

Created by a certified consultant – Only trained Sisterlocks consultants can officially install and maintain them.

Lightweight & versatile – Because they are so tiny, they mimic loose natural hair and allow for easy styling.

Best for long-term commitment – Sisterlocks follow a structured maintenance schedule and require consistency.

🔹 Best for: Those who want a refined, lightweight look, access to a certified stylist, and a structured maintenance plan.

What Are Microlocs?

Microlocs, on the other hand, are a more customizable and flexible alternative. They are:

Similar in size to Sisterlocks but installed differently – Microlocs can be started using twists, braids, interlocking, or coils.

More accessible & affordable – You don’t need a certified consultant; a skilled loctician (or even DIY methods) can install them.

Versatile in styling & maintenance – While they can mimic Sisterlocks, they also allow for more personal variation.

A great option for those who want creative freedom – You can decide on parting, installation methods, and overall maintenance.

🔹 Best for: Those who want a smaller loc style without strict guidelines, more affordability, and the freedom to customize their journey.

Why I Chose Microlocs

After months of research, I realized that Microlocs aligned best with my vision for the freedom to customize my look. I love the natural fullness of Microlocs, but I also wanted to maintain some loose curls at my ends. Unlike Sisterlocks, which require full loc formation, Microlocs allowed me to keep my ends unlocked and curly, giving me the best of both worlds!

Which One Is Right for You?

Both Sisterlocks and Microlocs offer a beautiful, versatile, and empowering way to embrace your natural hair. Your decision will depend on:

✔️ Do you want a structured, trademarked system? → Sisterlocks

✔️ Do you want more creative freedom and affordability? → Microlocs

✔️ Do you want to keep your ends curly or semi-loose? → Microlocs

✔️ Do you love the sleek grid pattern of Sisterlocks? → Sisterlocks

At Energy and Locs, I specialize in both Microlocs and Sisterlocks. If you’re ready to start your loc journey and want a stylist who truly understands the physical and spiritual journey you're about to start, I’d love to work with you!
